OUR STORY
Welcome to our life in freedom!
We are Amy (24) and Joshua (30),
the duo behind Kuusj, De Varkenshoederij, and Vleesatelier Kuusj & Ko.
Our story begins with a dream: letting pigs live in natural freedom.
No industry, no mass production, but a life as it was meant to be.
Neither of us comes from a farming background,
but our passion for animals and nature brought us together.​​
Amy: “I studied as a veterinary assistant and saw how important it is to treat animals with respect.”
Joshua: “And I studied animal and livestock farming and saw how the industry was taking over. We wanted something different.”
In 2016, we started De Varkenshoederij. We wanted to keep pigs the way it should be: in nature, with space and freedom.
Our Kuusje live on fields and meadows, where they can root and show their natural behaviour.
​After 12 months, they are slaughtered with great care for animal welfare.
In our meat workshop at Hoofdstraat 63 in Mechelen, we process the meat into high-quality products.
We work together with local farmers and regional producers to let you taste the very best of our region.
Our meat can be ordered online and we deliver throughout the Netherlands!
But that’s not all. We also provide day care activities for people with a distance to the labour market.
In this way, we extend our idea of freedom into society as well.
